On Tour with Secret Service Agent Clint Hill

FIVE PRESIDENTS: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. We have been having a fantastic time meeting people and catching up with friends along the way. Here’s a glimpse into our travels so far. We took in a Broadway play — “Beautiful” — it was superb, I highly recommend it! IMG_1981 And we had the opportunity to share Secret Service stories with two former SAIC’s of the New York Field Office, Brian Parr and Steve Hughes – a fun evening and another great meal at Del Frisco’s. We had lunch with a group of students who asked some great questions, around a unique table filled with bumper stickers of candidates past and present. Then it was back to Washington DC for a talk and book signing at the Newseum. The Q&A sessions are always interesting and always include a few people who want to debate me on conspiracy theories. IMG_2166 In Dallas, we were welcomed back to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza–our fourth appearance there–with a lovely VIP reception preceding our presentation of Five Presidents. Then it was on to Atlanta for a return visit to the Carter Center at the Jimmy Carter Library. Another great crowd that included Tom Johnson, my longtime friend who started his career as a White House fellow in the LBJ White House. And now, we are in Buffalo, New York — arrived yesterday and had a fantastic evening at the Larkin Square Author Series. It was a beautiful spring evening so they held the event outside. Another great crowd that included more than a few people who had traveled across the border from Canada, as well as some who came from Rochester and Syracuse. Lisa and I are truly overwhelmed by the affection and so thrilled that people are enjoying our latest collaboration about my Secret Service career, Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. Tomorrow we will be at commencement exercises at Niagara University where I am deeply honored to accept an honorary doctorate. ]]>

Just finished reading this wonderful book. It was an emotional ride for me as I re-lived those days. JFK was my idol. My absolute gratitude to you for your service. You are a true American hero. I wish I could meet you to personally offer my thanks. My prayers are with you and may God bless you.

    Dear Mr Hill,
I was a little boy sitting in my first grade classroom on that fateful day in November 1963. The events of that weekend are burned into my mind like no other. I’m now 58 years old and I find it strange that almost no one in the world who is younger than myself has any first hand memories of the whole affair. Thank you for sharing your still vivid memories with me and with so many more to whom the assassination is just something their history books recounted. My little classroom was only about 50 miles from Dallas. We felt like it happened in our back yard. I sense that there has been quite a sadness in your life as a result of your involvement. I doubt that any of us can really appreciate the depth of that sadness. I know you don’t consider yourself a hero but your actions that day were certainly heroic. You are the guy in the story that we can all identify with the most. The glamour of the lives that the Kennedy family lived was completely out of reach for most of us. They were handsome, beautiful, rich and famous. Everything that we were not. But we felt connected to them. You were the every day Joe doing your job. Every time I watch the film in it’s slow motion agony, I want you to make it to the car just a bit sooner. Of course you never do. But you tried. You gave it your very best effort. I’ve always been inspired by your action that day. No one else ran to the car. But you did with all the speed you could muster. You didn’t get to the President but you did get to Mrs Kennedy and she knew that she could count on you. Thank you for what you did in service to our country and thank you for sharing your incredible memories.
